Through 280 photographs, we discover a dazzling Newton’s ironic yet fascinated interpretation of a way of life characterised by ease and elegance, a world dominated by appearance and superficiality. While the exhibition focuses heavily on this period, it also looks at Newton’s historic links with the Riviera. ![]() There, he also developed “Yellow Press”, one of his most personal series, full of strange, disquietingly glamorous images inspired by crime scenes. In Monaco, Newton finally did landscapes, a genre of photography that he had never previously explored. His works from this period also include portraits of the dancers of the Ballets de Monte-Carlo and the Princely Family. It was here too, that he produced a great many portraits of “beautiful people”, some of whom had taken up residence in Monaco, others merely passing through. He used the city’s construction sites as backdrops for luxury fashion house campaigns and the garage of his apartment house as a stage for several fashion editorials. Monaco provided Newton with a most original setting for his fashion photography. The period between 19 (the year of his death) would prove to be one of the most prolific, and incontrovertibly the most liberated, of his entire career. Newton was sixty-one years old and, thanks to a succession of daring series that pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable, had forged a reputation as one of the greatest fashion photographers of his generation.īut his move to Monaco was not a retirement. These were, allegedly, the words spoken by Helmut Newton to the Monegasque official in charge of processing his papers. “ Newton, Riviera” is a pretext for a new look at the work of one of the 20th century’s foremost photographers through a fascinating collection of images, some that have become famous, others rarely displayed to the public. The title of the exhibition clearly circumscribes a geography, that of the French Riviera to Bordighera, Italy, which Helmut Newton photographed from the 1960s until his death in the early 2000s. ![]() Newton’s photography idealizes her in such a natural way that we, as the viewers, become fascinated by her beauty.Woman examining man, Calvin Klein, American Vogue, Saint-Tropez, 1975 Taylor was fifty-three years old when this photo was taken, embodying the dream of aging beautifully with grace. These vivid color elements, along with her bright red lipstick, are subtly mesmerizing. Viewers become enthralled with Elizabeth Taylor’s beauty as the eye moves from the background to the foreground of the image viewers lock eyes with Elizabeth Taylor at the bottom of the frame, where she stands in a pool, draped in jewels and holding a strikingly green parrot. A mundane scene is beautifully and artistically curated as she models a garment that seems to have been made specifically for her.Ĭarelessly erotic yet sophisticated, Newton’s images are hypnotic because his models capture viewers’ attention through the intense sense of character that Newton conveys through the lens. ![]() Lot, Burbank (1984) depicts the actress standing collected and composed while her hair and dress move in the wind as a contrast. Helmut Newton’s portrayal of the woman as a symbol of fashion and commerce was a new vision that revolutionized advertising. The Helmut Newton Foundation is currently showing Hollywood, a red-carpet exhibition in Berlin, that gives us a peek at rich and famous icons of entertainment photographed by Newton and others. Another effect his portraits of celebrities have is to create nostalgia for the classics here in the twenty-first century. His iconic portraits of celebrities tempt the viewer to strive for a certain lifestyle, enticing them with flashes of haute coutour, glamour and success.
